HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - The Henrico County Police Department says a man was shot Sunday night during a fight on Varina High School’s campus.

Police say the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. In a letter sent home to parents, the school’s principal said the fight occurred during a pick-up basketball game.

School officials say the man shot is a basketball coach, but he has not yet been identified.

The victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No suspects have been named.

Irving Haggins has lived across the street from Varina High School for almost 50 years. He says he didn’t hear the shots fired but is alarmed that the incident happened.

“It’s scary because something like that just doesn’t happen around here,” Haggins said. “I’ve lived here almost 50 years and never had any problems.”

The school’s principal, Ann Marie Seely, said in an email to parents that “in working with Henrico Police, this incident appears to be isolated. We do not believe there is a safety threat to the campus.”

The school, which is closed for the Columbus Day holiday, will “be open on time tomorrow and ready to welcome our students back from their long weekend,” she said.

Police say they will increase patrols at the school on Tuesday too.
