RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Doug Wilder, Richmond's former mayor, says the State Supreme Court should have been allowed to hear the cases brought against him by City Hall and the School Board.

Last month, current Mayor Dwight Jones ended a costly legal battle by withdrawing the appeals of two lawsuits over mayoral powers. The lawsuits stem from the Wilder Administration and cost the city more than $1 million.

Wilder said dropping those suits after spending all that money was not the right decision and that the citizens deserve to know what the state's highest court would have decided.

<You need to get past who's in charge and make sure somebody is in charge," Wilder said. "If the people had wanted a manager form of government, they would not have changed what was changed some five years ago."

Wilder was referencing the city's move to a publicly elected mayor rather than an appointed official.

Wilder said he believes there are still problems with the city's charter that need to be addressed.
