VCU victory celebrations continue in Richmond

Posted by Colby Rogers - email

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The celebration continues for VCU after Monday night's CAA victory over George Mason. The win automatically earns the Rams their second bid in three years to the NCAA tournament.

Christopher Hayes and his family have gone to every VCU home game this season. As he grabbed a cup of morning coffee on Tuesday - a caffeine jolt after staying up so late - Hayes said he couldn't wait to rub the Rams' 71-50 win in his friend's face.

"I feel really great," Hayes said. "I have a friend of mine that's a GMU grad, so there's a little rivalry between us. I've already sent him e-mails and text messages just giving him a hard time."

The VCU Bookstore was jumping with excitement Monday morning. The store has limited hours this week because the university is on spring break, but the web site is already offering a championship t-shirt for sale.

VCU sophomore Kirsten Reiss says she might buy one. She was very excited to hear about the Rams' victory.

"We don't have a football team, so we don't have that area," Reiss said. "At least we can really excel at basketball and we can get that recognition because no one really recognizes VCU for athletics."

The CAA finals victory puts the Rams at 24 wins, 9 losses this season.

VCU will have to wait until Sunday to find out who they'll play in the NCAA Tournament.

You can play against other viewers in the NBC12 Hoops Frenzy Challenge in a competition to win a 50" flat-screen TV provided by All Wired Up. For information and pre-registration for the challenge, click here.
