Snow blankets Virginia

By Andrew Freiden, NBC12 Meteorologist

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A two-part storm system is starting to pull away from Virginia, giving a big-time snowfall to Central Virginia.

The first system started as cold rain and sleet and turned to all snow late in the afternoon yesterday.  The Richmond Airport is reporting an accumulation of 9.5" so far, but reports in to NBC12 have total accumulations around 10" in some areas.

Snow is ending as of this writing-but there may be some leftover snow showers or flurries before noon.

The big story from here on out will be temperatures.  It has fallen into the mid-20s and will stay in the 20s throughout the day.  Tonight will be very cold with clear skies. Temps will fall to around 10-15 degrees tonight.  That's likely to bring a big mess on secondary roads tomorrow morning.

Many public school districts have called off classes Monday.
