RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - When the Movieland Theater opens in Richmond Friday, it will be the first new movie theater in the city in 35 years.

The theater has been three years in the making and the theater's owners say they're not worried about the timing of their opening during the economic downturn.

The renovated locomotive factory features 17 state-of-the-art screens with stadium seating. It will play first run movies only, won't play any commercials before the movies, and has the capability for digital 3D projection.

Tickets will be market price and the theater is applying for an ABC license to sell beer and wine along with the popcorn and candy.

Movieland's owners say the theater will not only be a boost for the local economy, but also a potential boost for the Boulevard.

As that area of the city also receives a facelift, the theater owners plan to turn a history copper forge in the parking lot into a restaurant.

The box office opens Friday at 8:30 a.m. and the first showing will be at 9 a.m.
