CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A woman and her son suffered serious burns Tuesday morning in a gas station fire on Hull Street.
Chesterfield County Fire and EMS Battalion Chief David Bailey says investigators believe static electricity caused the pump to ignite when the mother passed her son the gas nozzle.
The woman and her 10-year-old son were rushed to VCU Medical Center. The mother suffered burns to her hands, while the son suffered burns to his torso and face.
The owner of the Shell Station at the corner of Hull Street and Turner Road says an employee had a difficult time seeing the incident, but that he turned off the pumps and dialed 911 when he saw the fire.
Fire crews say nearby witnesses rushed to help and that one man used his coat to put out the flames.
