That final day, was Friday.
McDonnell resigned his position earlier this month in order to concentrate full time on his candidacy for Governor.
McDonnell is running unopposed for the Republican party's nomination.
The outgoing AG said that he was proud of what he was able to accomplish in his three years as the state's top lawyer.
"There were several key issues areas that I wanted to see significant reform on," he said. "Dealing with homeland security, internet safety, property rights, prisoner litigation and mental health reform and we've been able to get all those things passed in short order and signed by the Governor."
In addition to running for Governor full time, McDonnell plans to return to a law firm in Virginia Beach where he once practiced.
His Chief Deputy Bill Mims has been tapped to take over as Attorney General.
