RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Commonwealth University plans to announce who will become its next president.

The Board of Visitors is holding a closed meeting Friday evening to vote on the contract of the person who will succeed 69-year-old Eugene Trani, who is retiring June 30.

Board member Edward Bersoff, chaiman of the 17-member presidential search committee, said the board chose Trani's successor among three finalists. The panel considered about 40 candidates and interviewed 12 people.

Trani has been VCU's president since 1990. He will remain at VCU as a faculty member.
