Va Senate committee passes revised budget

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Senate Finance Committee has approved a revised state budget that uses anticipated federal stimulus money to restore funding for crucial services.

The committee on Wednesday unanimously approved its version of the spending plan. Its budget uses $216 million to plug holes in health care, education and public safety funding that had been carved out by a more than $3 billion budget shortfall.

The Senate committee retained a provision that would allow for the early release of nonviolent offenders. But the panel reduced the number of eligible inmates by about 500 from Gov. Timothy Kaine's proposal to release about 1,100 inmates early to save money.

The full Senate is expected to vote on the budget Wednesday afternoon.
