RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A large group of same-sex couples gathered in downtown Richmond Thursday to apply for marriage licenses.

It's done to protest court and voter decisions restricting legal matrimony to opposite-sex couples.

Activists have also geared up for rallies in New York, Arkansas, California, Florida, Kentucky and Nevada.

This week, which includes Lincoln's birthday, Charles Darwin's birthday and Valentine's Day, marks the 12th annual Freedom to Marry Week.

Same-sex partners and supporters of the rallies say that no couple in a committed relationship should be denied permission to marry.

After going to the Richmond Marriage License Bureau, the couples and their supporters will march to City Hall.
