House passes; Senate awaits Va money data

Posted by Colby Rogers - email

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The state Senate on Thursday chose to wait nearly a week for critical money data to finish work on its budget.

The House of Delegates debated into the early evening before passing its budget of about $77 billion that is certain to be amended substantially within days.

The House voted 88-to-11 to enact its amendments.

Thursday was the deadline for the House and the Senate to complete passage of their own versions of the amended budget.

But with state government's fiscal picture clouded until it knows the depth of its revenue shortfall from a cratering global economy or how much it will receive from the federal economic stimulus package, the deadline became academic.

The Senate tried to amend a rule pushing the deadline back, but the House rejected that on a 44-to-55 vote.
