CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A public meeting in Chesterfield Monday night will focus on an address change proposal county leaders have been working on for months.

About 55,000 Chesterfield residents and 4,000 businesses currently have either a Richmond, Petersburg or Colonial Heights mailing address.

A study found the address overlaps cost the county about $2 million each year in tax revenue.

Estimates show that extra money could pay for 35 new teachers , 15 new police officers, 30 new school buses , four new fire engines and eight new ambulances for Chesterfield.

The address changes are currently just proposals.

If citizens show support for the idea, administrators could present the zip code change proposals to the Supervisor Board in May. From there it would go to the U.S. Postal Service for approval.
