RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - If you watched the Super Bowl this past weekend, you saw an exciting football game that most viewers watched because of the pure spectacle and the tradition of the event.
Here in Richmond, we lost a sports tradition when the Richmond Braves moved away to an Atlanta suburb. We lost them mainly because fewer fans went to the games - and fewer fans went to the games because the Diamond became outdated and, frankly, lacked any charm.
Meanwhile, the University of Richmond is building a new stadium on campus - one that will be smaller than their previous home at City Stadium, but it will be a modern facility located in a beautiful setting. I have no doubt that it will bring out the Spider faithful, plus attract many new fans as well.
Let's take a close look at the proposals for a new ballpark and figure this out. If we build it right, a team will come and fans will return to a Richmond tradition.
