Dominion offers 'green power'

Posted by Colby Rogers - email

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Dominion Virginia Power is offering customers the ability to buy renewable energy certificates for some or all of their electricity usage.

Richmond-based Dominion said it will buy certificates from energy producers for the amount equivalent to the customer participation level. The energy purchased will come from sources like wind, solar, falling water, biomass, energy from waste, wave motion, tides and geothermal power.

Customers can specify to buy certificates in the amount equal to all the electricity they use. For residential customers using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity a month, the additional cost would be $15 per month.

Customers could also specify a certain amount of renewable energy certificates to be purchased in $2 increments. Each $2 will purchase the equivalent of 133 kilowatt-hours in the certificates.
