HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - The mother of a 2-year-old Henrico boy who died of a gunshot wound to the head over the weekend is speaking out.
Ainalee Jefferson says she was at work when she got the call about what happened.
"I'm just going to follow my heart that this was just an accident and my baby is in a safe place. He's okay now," Jefferson said.
Jefferson says she has no idea where the gun came from, but reports say the child may have found it in the yard of their home on Watts Street.
The boy's grandmother Denise Jefferson, 57, has been arrested and charged with child endangerment and a misdemeanor weapons charge. Police say they don't know who may have pulled the trigger.
The family is staying with friends for now and Ainalee Jefferson says she's trying to find somewhere else for them to live.
Denise Jefferson's trial is slated for April.
