CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A road construction contractor changed the traffic patterns on routes 288 and 60 overnight without telling anyone - including VDOT.

The "keep right" and "no left turn" signs didn't help any drivers figure out what was going on Tuesday morning as they were exiting 288 south to Route 60 west. The contractor for the Watkins Center Road project decided to open up new lanes, but neither the drivers nor VDOT were prepared for it.

"He made the decision that he felt was in the best interest and we are working through what issues we have with the decision he's made," said VDOT spokesperson Dale Totten.

The main traffic issue is with the temporary traffic patteren that centered around one Watkins Center Parkway light. A barrier now prevents drivers coming off 288 south from making a left turn. That forced drivers to keep heading west into Powhatan before making a u-turn.
