Victim's relatives talk about tragic fire

HENRICO, VA (NBC12) - Joyce Braxton says she never tried to interfere in her daughter's life but always feared the worst.

Joyce said, "I told her. I told her that the girl is trying to kill her and she didn't think that was going to happen like that. She always said ma, I can take care of myself."

Keiona Braxton shared a Henrico apartment on Crenshaw Road with Kayla Armstrong's ex-boyfriend who is also the father of Armstrong's daughter. Police say the three adults argued last Saturday when Armstrong dropped by to pick up her child. It led to assault and vandalism charges against Armstrong.

Four days later, Keiona was found dead inside her burning apartment. Armstrong is a person of interest in the New Year's Eve homicide.

Temeal Braxton, Keiona's sister says, "She had just told me she was pregnant the night before."

"She was a sweet loving daughter and I love all my children and she didn't deserve to go like that," says Joyce.

Keiona's relatives say Armstrong had been violent toward Keiona since 2006 when she moved in with Armstrong's ex. In May of that year, police say Armstrong had been convicted of unlawful wounding after she cut Keiona's head and arm. Police say Armstrong was court ordered to stay away from Keiona. But relatives say the trouble continued.

"I don't think she got the justice she deserved. My sister, I don't think nobody was on her side when it really came down to it. I really fault the police for this being the way it is at this point," says Temeal.

Relatives vowed to see that justice is served.
