HENRICO, VA(NBC12) - The route currently used carries almost 11,000 drivers everyday. The new bridge will allow double that with the addition of another lane.
VDOT spokesperson Dawn Eischen said, "We're expecting that it will really cut down on the amount of congestion during rush hour, allow a smooth travel from Route 288 to I-295 because they'll have their own lane once the flyover is open."
VDOT had hoped to have the bridge open by the end of 2008, but recent detailed inspections revealed some minor compliance issues that needed addressed.
"The bridge had some gaps in some of areas, they're small very minor millimeter gaps, but those have to be resolved if we want the bridge to last the 70 years we expect it to last," said Eischen.
More an issue of durability than safety VDOT says, but enough to delay the project.
VDOT project manager Ray Johnston said "When you think about the fact that our grandchildren's children will be driving on this bridge we want to make sure its right for years to come and the best time to do that is right now."
Crews will work mostly at night to get the project back on track. The estimated opening for the flyover bridge is now January or February.
