RICHMOND, VA (NBC12) - Today was a busy day for area retailers, as thousands turned out for those day-after- Christmas deals.
This was the scene in eastern Henrico, near the White Oak Village Shopping Center, with crowded parking lots and packed shopping carts at just about every store.
December 26 is traditionally a day for big sales, but shoppers we talked to say this year it's more important than ever to find a good deal around the holidays.
"We shopped a little bit less this year because of the economy and everything. Less money, less shopping," said consumer Sherman Lucien.
"As I say, the prices were good, good, good," said shopper Shirley Lacario. "I couldn't refuse it."
The deep discounts and post-Christmas crowds may be too little to late for the retailers: early numbers indicate that overall sales are down this holiday season compared to last.
Online shoppers also took advantage of holiday deals.
Amazon.com says the 2008 holiday season was its best ever.
The website had more than 6.3 million items ordered and 5.6 million shipped on its peak day, December 15.
However Amazon's performance was the exception not the norm this year.
