Thefts from cars on the rise in Richmond

From NBC12 News

RICHMOND, VA (NBC12) - Richmond Police are warning residents in the Stratford Hills neighborhood to lock their doors since the area has been a recent target of thieves.

Thefts from cars are being reported in the area of Shawnee Road, Warner Road, South Drive, and Montauk Drive.
Theft from cars in Stratford Hills is up as much as 30 percent this fall compared to last year when the economy was better.

Late last week, police arrested Donald Coleman, who was charged with grand larceny.
They say it wasn't hard to make the connection.

"He had in his possession several GPS units as well as $53 in loose change in his jacket pocket," says Richmond Police Lt. Scott Booth. "Yeah, when you find somebody with that much loose change on their person, that's about 10 pounds. So, uh, yeah ... it's not the norm."

That doesn't mean the rash of thefts is over. To protect yourself -- make sure your doors are securely locked.
