A man accused of fatally stabbing a woman has been found not guilty.

On Wednesday, a judge ruled that Johnny Hughes is not guilty by reason of insanity.

Last October, Susanne Thompson, 70, was walking her dog, Angie, on a Saturday morning in the Fan, when she was stabbed to death by Hughes.

His family says Hughes was diagnosed with schizophrenia in his early 20's and say they had tried for years to get him help.

"It's very painful to see that when you try to get help for individuals that it's falling on death ears and as a result you have to deal with tragic situations before you can get help," says family member Jackie Hughes.

Hughes is headed to the Central State Mental Health facility in Petersburg. It will be up to his doctors if and when he gets out.
