There are many situations in life that grant us the opportunity to feel good about ourselves, but we are often easily distracted and tend to focus on the negative. It's time to turn that around, celebrate who we are, and feel good about the lives we are living!
I spent years longing for the blond hair and blue eyes I knew I could never have, and even more years of torture wanting a smaller more delicate nose. Then one day it struck me - without my nose I wouldn't be me anymore. So I decided to accept the way I looked, for better or for worse, and have some fun! It hasn't always been easy; it is human nature to want what we don't have. I have my good days and my bad, but I have realized that I would much rather spend time enjoying what I do have rather than wishing for something else.
The idea is to make a simple shift in the way we think about ourselves. Instead of wishing we looked differently, we should focus on acceptance. Once we accept the way we look can we celebrate it - and that is what feeling good is all about!
So, where to begin?
1. Find a style role model.
Pick someone whose style you admire and would like to emulate. This will help define your personal style. Try to choose someone who shares some of your physical qualities, but remember, use this person as inspiration, not a personal clone!
2. Learn what styles and colors look good on you and accentuate your best features. Spend a day shopping with a friend whose opinion you trust. Try on a variety of clothing: this will give you the perspective to see how different things change the way you look and feel. Also, experiment in the makeup department. Rather than trying to makeover your entire face in one day, focus on your best feature: eyes, lips or cheeks, and find a product that will accentuate that.
3. Pay attention to what other people are wearing.
Take notice of people whose body type or coloring is similar to yours and make mental notes when you see someone who looks really good or really bad!!
4. Try not to compare yourself to people who don't look at all like you.
Instead, enjoy the physical qualities you have that make you special and that other people may envy: long legs, clear skin, beautiful healthy hair, a great smile, exotic features.
5. Trust yourself.
If you are staring in the mirror and you are not sure if something looks good on you, chances are it doesn't!! We all know when we look good because we feel it. It is a combination of comfort and confidence that we present to the world. That's what we are aiming for!
Looking good is about trial and error - the most important thing to remember is to have fun and feel good about yourself!
