CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -
J.B. Watkins Elementary School students raised more than $42,000 for the American Heart Association during the 2017-2018 year.
Students took over 400 heart-healthy challenges and raised the money, making them the number one school in Virginia and 19th in the country for participating with the association.
Students pledged to eat and drink healthy, along with exercising for more than 60 minutes a day.
Tex Stinnett raised $1,000 and won the chance to throw a pie in the face of a physical education teacher.
Students also competed in a jump rope competition for the most consecutive jumps.
The American Heart Association is presenting a new youth program this coming school year called Kids Heart Challenge. In addition to the physical and nutritional health components, the program will also focus on emotional well-being and character building.
