As we're seeing the opioid addiction crisis grow, there are victims that you may not have thought of.
When women use opioids during pregnancy, it can have serious consequences for them - and their babies.
These women need comprehensive care during pregnancy, and their babies may need special help when they're born.
Dr. Margaret Villers is with The Perinatal Centers with Henrico Doctor's, Johnston Willis, and Chippenham Hospital.
"Many of the drugs used to manage opioid abuse are safe for pregnancy," said Dr. Villers.
Dr. Villers says epidurals are also safe for women using opioids.
As for the babies, it is possible that they could go through withdrawal after birth.
"We're never quite sure how mild or severe it will be - it depends on the drugs the mom is taking," said Dr. Villers. "We do try to reach out to women before their babies are born to help educate them and give them the tools to be successful mothers."
