CLIPPER GAP, CA (KOVR/CNN) – Animal rescue workers in California are looking to save a deer that has a peanut butter jar stuck on her jaw.

Residents of Clipper Gap, CA, said the young deer can't eat or drink because of the jar, which a closer look shows is from Trader Joe's.

The deer has been struggling either to dislodge the jar or to nibble grass it can't reach because of it.

"My suspicion is [the jar] might have been used for baiting," said Sandra Purcell, a local concerned about the deer. "This is a human-caused problem and I think we need to fix it."

The deer makes daily visits to Purcell's backyard, and to the backyard of her neighbor, Debra Twardus.

"You can tell she just wants to eat. You know, she's hungry, she's thirsty," Twardus said. "You can see her trying, and then she starts whining, so that tears at my heart."

The neighbors want state wildlife biologists to help free her, but the California Department of Fish and Wildlife has not assessed the deer yet.

A Fish and Wildlife spokesperson said: "Sometimes a rescue effort can be dangerous to people and the animal. Sometimes it can be better to let the animal dislodge it itself."

So far, it's unclear whether a rescue will be in the works.

"I don't want her to die, because without water, in this kind of heat, she's not going to last long," Purcell said. "She deserves a fighting chance."

Neighbors said a local wildlife rescue group is now working with Fish and Wildlife to coordinate a rescue mission. Rescuers will likely need to tranquilize the deer to get remove the jar.
