Passenger dies after vehicle strikes tree, catches on fire

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) -

A driver is facing charges following a crash in Hanover that left one person dead.

It happened on I-295 near exit 38, around 12:40 a.m.

According to police, the vehicle was heading northbound when it ran off the right side of the road, struck a tree and caught fire.

Three people were in the vehicle at the time of the crash. The front seat passenger, identified as 20-year-old Xavier Pierre Jamerson of Washington D.C., died at the scene.

The driver, identified as Dewayne Jeter, and another passenger were taken to the hospital. Jeter suffered minor injuries, and the second passenger suffered serious injuries.

Police have charged Jeter with reckless driving; failure to maintain control.

The crash remains under investigation.
