CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A document that is older than the Declaration of Independence was recently found in Chesterfield County.
The 1749 Commission of the Peace, which is essentially Chesterfield County's birth certificate, was lost for decades and is now safely stored in the archives at the Chesterfield County Courthouse.
A volunteer with the Chesterfield County Historical Society found the document in the bottom of a box of archived newspapers.
Visitors can see a copy in the records room of the courthouse or at the Chesterfield Historical Society of Virginia, located at 10111 Iron Bridge Road.
