MECHANICSVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Seven-year-old Sawyer Perkins was diagnosed with an aggressive rare form of brain cancer at the age of five, and now the community is holding a fundraiser for her family.
A large tumor was discovered on Sawyer's brain on April 23, 2016. She was rushed to UVA Medical Center where she had her tumor removed after a six-hour surgery.
On April 29, 2016, they discovered the tumors were cancerous, and she already had cancerous cells in her spinal fluid. She was then diagnosed with Stage 3 anaplastic ependymoma.
Sawyer was admitted to St. Jude's for treatment, but her parents, Nathan and Jamie, need help with everyday life expenses.
The event will be held at the Sears at Chesterfield Towne Center, located at 11500 Midlothian Turnpike, on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 5:30 p.m.
