RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The 2018 General Assembly session kicked off on Wednesday, and a former news anchor turned delegate from Roanoke shared something that was special to him.

Former WDBJ news anchor Chris Hurst was sworn in as a delegate on Wednesday. Before he was sworn in, he posted a photo on Twitter of a tie that his girlfriend, Allison Parker, gave him for Valentine's Day back in 2015.

"I haven't worn this tie in a year and yet, it's Wednesday again," Hurst tweeted. "I'll proudly have it on today when I'm sworn in as Delegate."

He also tweeted, "Our love isn't gone, but it's changed. It's channeled into the energy & passion I now have to serve."

Parker was a reporter at WDBJ when she and photographer Adam Ward were gunned down on live television on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, by a disgruntled former employee.
