Sunset on Tuesday afternoon is at 4:59 p.m., which is the area's first pre-5 p.m. sunset of the season. The area won't see a 5 p.m. sunset again until Dec. 29.

Our earliest sunset time is 4:51 p.m. and will occur from Nov. 30 through  Dec. 12.

When Andrew Freiden posted about this on Twitter, he got some humorous responses from people who don't like it getting dark so early:

Take note of the chart above and you'll see that our shortest day of the year will occur on Dec. 21, the Winter Solstice. Central Virginia will have precisely 9 hours, 34 minutes, and 15 seconds of daylight and thereafter, the days will slowly but surely get longer again.
