ST. LOUIS (KTVI/CNN) - Car crashes happen every day, but one that occurred over the weekend was a little different.

The vehicle flew off a hill and landed on top of a house.

The driver is in critical condition with lower body injuries.

The St. Louis Fire Department said the driver sped down Memika, crossed over Lillian Avenue, hit a pole, knocked over the stop sign and then flipped over landing on top of a house.

There were still skidmarks on the ground.

Luckily they say the occupant of the home was at the gym at the time of the crash.

The fire department say it's no doubt the driver definitely lost control of the car.

The car launched off of a hill before landing into the roof of the home. It also appears to have damaged a neighboring home.

Firefighters say the driver a man was trapped under the dashboard. He was taken away from the scene by first responders and then taken to the hospital.

Firefighters said they've seen cars crash into homes, but they've never dealt with a car landing on the top of a house.

"This is kind of rare in the way it happened, how it happened, and how it was able to launch itself all the way up on top of the roof, and that always creates additional problems for us because fear of the roof coming down and stabilization of the vehicle while trying to get the individual out," St. Louis City Fire Department Deputy Chief Michael Arras said.

"The fact that he was trapped inside the vehicle wasn't just a slide him out. He was trapped," he added.

There is no word yet on why the driver was speeding.
