CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - The cleanup continues Monday morning in Chesterfield after motor oil spilled into the James River, near Dutch Gap.
The call came in around 4:30 p.m. Sunday for the 400 block of Coxendale Road, where someone noticed a sheen on the water. Once crews arrived, they determined that some type of motor oil was illegally dumped into the river.
Officials do not know exactly how much of the substance is in the water, but they said the area is about 30 yards offshore, covering around 100-150 yards.
Hazmat crews are surrounding the affected area with boons, and are working alongside the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.
The boat landing at Dutch Gap reopened Monday afternoon.
Crews spent Sunday evening to clean up the spill, and officials have confirmed it has been contained.
No word yet on a possible suspect.
