Frank Mason III honored as consensus national player of the year

Petersburg native Frank Mason III is the consensus national player of the year.  He achieved the honor when he was named the NABC player of the year Sunday night in Phoenix.  Earlier on Sunday Mason III won the Naismith Trophy.

In order to be recognized as a consensus player of the year, a student-athlete must win four major player of the year awards that are recognized by the NCAA.

Mason III previously won the AP player of the year award and the Oscar Robertson award.  The two awards he claimed on Sunday qualified him as the consensus POY.

He is the first player so honored in the proud history of Kansas University basketball.  Mason III can make it a sweep of all the major POY awards this Friday night during the Wooden Award presentation.
