POWHATAN, VA (WWBT) - Powhatan County Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Eric Jones, said Monday a PCPS employee fell victim to a phishing scam via email that might compromise the financial information for every employee in the school system. The scam email was tag-lined with Dr. Jones' name and the female employee, who works in the payroll department, thought she was responded to Dr. Jones.
The employee forwarded copies of 2016 W2 tax documents for every PCPS' employee to the scammer. Dr. Jones said as soon as the employee realized her mistake, she notified her supervisors.
Powhatan Schools has contacted the IRS, FBI, FTC, and local sheriff's office. Dr. Jones said the district is doing everything it can to keep employees' financial information secure.
Dr. Jones said an email was sent to all employees, notifying them about what happened. No students or anyone outside of people with a 2016 W2 with Powhatan Schools is impacted.
