RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Zakia McKensey is a trans woman on a mission. Her goal is to ensure that LGBTQ members are healthy, safe and living with purpose.
Zakia spent nearly 20 years working for the Richmond Health Department and Fan Free Clinic. Last year, she quit her job and used her savings to start a 501c3 foundation.
Nationz Foundation provides food, STD and STI testing, outreach activities and counseling services. It also serves as a space where LGBTQ people can come together and socialize.
Zakia says she lost a friend to HIV and has been committed to making sure people are educated and aware of their status. We talked with Zakia and a volunteer about the foundation's first year of operation and Nationz new campaign to start a shelter for homeless LGBTQ youth.
