RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

The Richmond groom determined to walk down the aisle despite being paralyzed accomplished his dream on Saturday.

"Bill Sweeney, a paraplegic for the last four years, joined his life with Cynthia's and walked at their reception," posted Elli Morris.

Sweeney woke up from a coma paralyzed after suffering from a stroke in his spine four years ago. He has been working with Sportable, which provides adaptive sports and recreation opportunities in the Richmond area.

Through Sportable, Bill discovered he could dream bigger than he ever imagined. Since becoming paralyzed, he has been swimming in the ocean, kayaking and skiing. He grew even more determined to walk.

That is when he discovered Sheltering Arms had an exoskeleton, and asked to do his rehab there.

"When I started thinking it was possible to walk…..I started thinking about my son’s wedding and it would be cool to stand at his celebration. Cynthia and I got engaged and this opportunity appeared. I thought, wouldn’t it be cool to use it for joining our lives?" said Sweeney.

Bill used the exoskeleton on Saturday to walk down the aisle to marry Cynthia. The rehab center and manufacturer let him borrow the exoskeleton for the event.
