CHESTER, VA (WWBT) -

A suspect is charged with attempted capital murder after investigators say he opened fire at an officer, after holding up a convenience store off Chester Road.

Dante Lakeith Wilkes, 21, of Colonial Heights, also faces robbery and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

Detectives say Wilkes demanded cash at the A Plus convenience store around 5 a.m. Thursday. Officers responded to a call for an armed robbery. Police say one of the officers who arrived on the scene spotted Wilkes and ordered him to surrender. Investigators say Wilkes didn’t obey commands and fired at the officer. The officer returned fire, wounding him.

"The suspect fired at the officer. The officer returned fire, striking the suspect. The officer was not injured," said Chesterfield Police Captain Michael Louth.

Wilkes then fled into the woods near the Waffle House on Old Lane. Police quickly blocked off the area, and apprehended Wilkes. He was taken to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.

"Hard job. I'm just glad no one else got hurt," said neighbor Joshua Wright, who passed by to check out the crime scene at his regular convenience store.

The officer was placed on administrative leave, as is standard for officer-involved shootings. Police are still investigating the case. Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.
