PARADISE ISLAND, BAHAMAS (WWBT) - JeQuan Lewis scored a game-high 21 points and VCU shot 58 percent from the floor in the first half, but it wasn't enough, as Baylor used a big second frame to send the Rams to a 71-63 loss in the Battle 4 Atlantis quarterfinals. The defeat marks the first of the season for Will Wade's club.
Lewis scored VCU's first eight points of the game, and helped the Rams to a 36-28 lead at the break, behind the hot shooting effort, and a defensive performance that allowed VCU to hold its own against a lengthy Bears squad. The second half saw Baylor's Johnathan Motley take control. He would end with 19 points and ten rebounds, and the Bears put together a final surge that powered them to the win.
Ahmed Hamdy scored 14 points for VCU in the losing cause, while Johnny Williams chipped in 12. Redshirt freshman Samir Doughty put together a nice showing, scoring eight points and pulling down seven rebounds. Lewis dished out seven assists to go with his 21 points.
The free throw line was a factor, as Baylor went to the foul line 33 times, where the Bears scored 27 points, compared to the Rams' 19 free throws. VCU was out-rebounded 34-26, but its defensive effort led to ten steals.
Now the Rams shift their focus to St. John's, which fell to Michigan State, 73-62. VCU and the Red Storm tip off at 7:00pm on Thursday, the first ever meeting between the two teams.
