Black Friday deals: What to buy and what to avoid

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Just one week to go 'til one of the biggest shopping days of the year!..but Black Friday doesn't operate the way it used to. If you're not armed with the right information, you're going to spend more than you should.

If you are waiting until Black Friday to shop - don't. Go now! Similar discounts have already started.

"Buy it now and don't worry about fighting a crowd," said savings expert Kyle James of ratherbeshopping.com.

Keep in mind, not every sale is a good deal.

"You can actually save more and get a better deal if you wait until after Black Friday," said James.

What should you leave off your list on Black Friday? James says ditch the toys.

"Retailers are realizing they have a captive audience. They're going to try to make some profit on Black Friday and get people to buy toys at close to full price." James says.

Dec. 15 will be the best day to get those toys, according to James' analysis of past trends. He recommends also passing on winter clothing, new cameras and especially name-brand TVs.

"If you're not buying it as a gift, wait until January. A couple of weeks leading up to the Superbowl is when we see the best deals on quality, name-brand TVs," said James.

January is the cheaper month for fitness gear too.

The bargains you should be looking for on Black Friday: video games, 3rd-tier TVs, small appliances and budget laptops.

"A lot of the deals are going to be available online this year," James' research shows.

Same deals - no crowds. If you do brave the store openings for those front-page doorbuster deals:

"Stores like Best Buy, Target, Walmart, they have a very limited supply, maybe 10, maybe 5 - so unless you're camping out, one of the first ones in line, you're just not going to get those deals," said James.

Black Friday is the one day Apple discounts its products.

"They do it in the form of a rebate. You might get a $50 Apple gift card or $100 Apple gift card," said James.

Mark your calendar for Friday, Dec. 16 - it's free shipping day, and you can bet retailers will offer extra discounts.

"Retailers are starting to feel the pinch," said James.

James' blog "Rather be Shopping" makes it simple to find the best cashback sites and smartphone apps that are guaranteed to save you money while Christmas shopping this year.
