Garth Brooks hosts sports camps during Richmond tour stop

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - An arena of young athletes in high spirits, and full of contagious energy, is what you found at Sports Reality in Mechanicsville Saturday.

"Teach them how to work together, not just be an individual," explained Mike Leach. "Seems like as a society now everybody wants to be more and more of an individual and that's not really how the real world works in my opinion."

80 kids of all ages, spent the day learning some of life's most valuable lessons through Garth Brooks Teammates for Kids Foundation.

"You stand a chance of being something greater as a part than by yourself," said Brooks.

The country music superstar spent time in the River City for shows at the Richmond Coliseum, but says athletic camps are an important part of every stop on his tour.

With the help of professional athletes, like former MLB player Jimmy Anderson, kids from all backgrounds, get the chance to train with coaches, and learn what it takes to be on a team.

Brooks says the hope is for sports to unify them and help them build a solid foundation.

"In a time in our nation right now when we need it most, unity is what we need, and we're teaching love and basic athletic skills," said Brooks. "But the truth is, what I hope they take away from here is they're not alone they have friends and hopefully new ones."
