Thank you Richmond and Central Virginia for expressing your civic duty through your vote this week. The system works, it is not rigged and democracy ruled the day.
In your local cities and counties, the citizens of Virginia exercised their right to vote. We elected a Mayor of Richmond, pending the counting of absentee ballots which may already be counted by the time you hear this message. We elected members of Congress, voted for constitutional amendments, referendums and a new President of the United States of America.
Yes, Democracy is the winner in the end and that is how it should be. So where do we go from here? The one thing I do know is that our responsibility as citizens is not a once-every-two-or-four-year responsibility, it’s an everyday responsibility.
Now that you have elected your leaders, you must hold them accountable for what they promised in exchange for your precious vote. It doesn’t matter if you are a Democrat, Republican or Independent. This is your government and you need to make sure it’s not business as usual, because we have seen that movie before.
Political leaders the people have spoken. Please don’t let us down. Because after all, you romanced us for a year, you finally proposed and we said "I do." Please don’t leave us standing at the altar. I remain optimistic about America.
