RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

Senator Tim Kaine expressed his disappointment in his running mate, Hillary Clinton, losing the presidential election while also saying "this isn't a time to give up."

Kaine posted on his Facebook page for the first time since he and Clinton conceded defeat to Donald Trump. He congratulated Trump and his running mate, Mike Pence, while also saying it was time for the country to move forward despite any disappointment from his own supporters.

"All of our elected officials owe it to the citizens of this country to try to put this divisive election behind us, and focus on the hard work of making government work for our people," wrote Kaine. "It all goes back to a very simple belief: We need to do all the good we can and serve one another."

Kaine returned to Richmond late Wednesday. He returns his position in the US Senate representing Virginia.
