Student intentionally tried to cut self at LC Bird

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - An investigation is underway at a Chesterfield high school after a student tried to cut himself in a classroom in front of the other students.

It happened at LC Bird High School in a collaborative classroom - with both general and special education students.

The principal sent out the following letter to parents on Friday:

Dear Parents and Guardians,
I'm writing to commend your students for their behavior earlier today during what otherwise could have been a distraction to our normal school day. I hope you will take time tonight to share my appreciation with your child.
Earlier today during school, a student in our school had a behavioral issue and attempted to hurt himself in front of his class. The situation, which was seen by one class only, was addressed immediately by staff. While federal laws prohibit me from sharing specific information, we did ask other students to leave the immediate area while we tended to the student. Our students followed directions wonderfully.
We have already worked directly with the parents in that classroom. Any student who needed support services was allowed to visit with a counselor. Out of an abundance of precaution, a school counselor will visit your child's classroom Monday to check on students. Please let us know if your child has concerns upon returning home today.
Again, I appreciate the students' willingness to follow directions in class and hope that you will share with them tonight how proud we are of them.
