Skunk tests positive for rabies after standoff with dog in Henrico

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) -

The Henrico Animal Protection Police department says a skunk that was involved in a standoff with a dog tested positive for rabies this week.

Police say the incident happened in the 6700 block of Osborne Turnpike on Monday; the positive test results were received Wednesday morning.

"The dog involved in the incident had a valid rabies vaccination and will be quarantined on the owner’s property," Henrico officials said in a news release. "There were no reports of any additional human or animal exposures involving this skunk."

Police say they're not sure if physical contact was made between the skunk and the dog, "but that was not able to be ruled out."

Police say the dog's owner shot and killed the skunk after the incident.

This is the second confirmed positive rabies case in Henrico in 2016.
