NEW YORK, NY (WWBT) - Aretha Franklin is getting no R-E-S-P-E-C-T from her 20 year old son, Denzel Washington.
As strange as it sounds, a Manhattan man named Denzel Washington accepted a plea deal Wednesday for attempting to strangle his mom, who shares a name with the Queen of Soul — Aretha Franklin.
The altercation happened inside the mom's apartment in a doorman building on West 93rd Street, according to the Manhattan criminal complaint.
"I am informed by Aretha Franklin," the criminal complaint in the case says, "that she observed the defendant place his hands around her neck and apply pressure, thereby causing redness, bruising and substantial pain to her neck."
The "American Gangster" star's namesake agreed to a lesser harassment charge and was sentenced to a conditional discharge, if he participates in an anger management program.
In another odd coincidence, Denzel the actor, 61, who is currently starring in a remake of the 1960 gunslinger classic "The Magnificent Seven," is a close pal of the Queen of Soul, and even helped ring in her 72nd birthday at a party in New York City in 2014.
Miss. Aretha Franklin the victim, who is 52 years old, is of no relation to the other Aretha Franklin and the New York Denzel Washington cannot lay any claim to any family ties with the more famous Denzel Washington.
