One man dead after Matoaca house fire

MATOACA, VA (WWBT) - Chesterfield Police and firefighters recovered a body after a fire broke out at a home in Matoaca Thursday morning.

Crews first arrived to the 21300 block of Deodora Drive just off River Road and Gilritchie Drive around 9:45 a.m. Thursday morning.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found smoke pouring from the roof. Once crews made entry into the home, they found more than fire and heavy smoke inside.

"They were able to make a quick entry into the house and found fire in the family room of the home. After a search of the home they found the body of an occupant that was in a bedroom," explains Lt. Jason Elmore with the Chesterfield Fire and EMS.

The Office of the Medical Examiner is working to determine the exact cause of death.

A source tells NBC12 the victim died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. That same source said the individual had previously called 911 Thursday threatening to harm himself.

Investigators would not confirm those details at this time.

While the fire was knocked down in around 15 minutes, crews were on the scene for much of the day trying to determine what the source of the blaze was.
