(WWBT) -

A simply tragic story out of Colorado where a mother died as she tried to save her two-year-old son who fell into a lake in Utah.

According to NBC affiliate KUSA, 35-year-old Chelsey Russell of Lakewood was on a moving house boat when her son fell off.

The San Juan Sheriff’s Office told KUSA that neither the child nor Russell were wearing life jackets when the mother dove into the water to save her son.

Once family members were able to untie a smaller boat and get back to Russell and her son, they found the mother unconscious with her son on top of her chest in the water.

They rushed Russell to the shore and immediately administered CPR, but it was too late as the 35-year-old mother was pronounced dead by the time they reached the shore.

According to KUSA, Russell was a practicing attorney in Denver with Welborn Sullivan Meck & Tooley, P.C. According to the firm's website, her practice focused on mineral title examination, business transactions and regulatory matters before the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

Russell leaves behind two children.
