The average cost of gastric bypass surgery is $23,000. The lap band and sleeve gastrectomy is $14,000 to $15,000. So at those prices, it's worth spending time to find out whether your insurance will cover it.
If your policy doesn't or you don't have insurance, most weight loss surgery programs will offer some type of self-pay discount or payment plan. Parham Doctors' Hospital has one of those programs. But as Dr. Gregory Schroder explains, some people did not get help because they could not afford it.
"Unfortunately patients wouldn't get the medical treatment they needed. So Advanced Surgical Partners and Parham Henrico Doctors' Hospital have partnered to develop this accelerated track for patients to get to their surgery within 8 to 10 weeks after seeing their surgeon for an initial consultation. Often insurance companies don't cover it or if they do they make patients wait 3, 6, or even 12 months for their surgery. As a result patients’ health risks can get worse and they have complications or their employer may change insurance and they lose the ability to get the surgery."
Dr. Schroder adds once a patient gets the weight loss surgery and lose weight, their issues surrounding diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea are resolved and they actually save money paying for the surgery themselves.
