RIO DE JANEIRO (WWBT) -

The result was in doubt for the first few minutes of the opening quarter between Serbia and the United States in the gold medal final, but it was the U.S. men's basketball team who came up victorious, defeating Serbia 96-66.

Team USA's gold medal is the third straight for the men's basketball team in the Olympic games.

The starting lineup for the men's basketball team in the final comprised of names that are a who's who of the NBA, featuring Golden State Warriors' Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson, New York Knicks' Carmelo Anthony, Cleveland Cavilers' Kyrie Irving, and Deandre Jordan of the LA Clippers.

Defense was the story of the United States men's team's drive to the gold medal, with Serbia only being allowed 66 points through the entire game and containing them outside the paint, holding Serbia to a 38 percent field goal percentage.

The closing ceremonies of the Rio Olympic Games begin tonight at 8 p.m. on NBC12.
