FARMVILLE, VA (WWBT) - Longwood University officials are expected to meet Tuesday morning to discuss where to house displaced students after a fire broke out during a Monday night storm.
Fire officials say the blaze in the four-story building was caused by the building being struck by lightning. Officials say the fire alarm was also struck.
The alarm was disabled, preventing firefighters from getting to the scene quickly.
When the firefighters arrived on the scene, they saw heavy smoke and fire on the roof. They had everyone evacuate the building, and the fire was marked under control a few hours later.
Dozens of students who were living in the apartment building will need to find a new place to stay. No one was hurt in the fire.
Many students are already on campus because classes start next week.
